ALTEN Group Case Studies Sharing

In Spain, ATEXIS  an ALTEN company – is helping members of the military to predict mental and physical fatigue and to act against it. Using sensors, AI-powered data analysis and machine learning, they are enabling military personnel to improve their performance and avoid critical errors.

Mental and physical fatigue can have an impact on the ability of any person to respond to challenges appropriately and promptly. This is especially critical for military personnel, who face frequent pressure to respond to exacting demands. Appreciating the potential of AI to help in improving the ability of military personnel to manage fatigue, the Spanish military contacted ATEXIS – an ALTEN company active in the aerospace, defense, naval, energy, and transport industries – to help them in doing so.

Challenge: To assess and mitigate the impact of mental and physical fatigue among military personnel during high-demand tasks

Solutions: Use of wearables and predictive models to monitor and foresee fatigue during missions, and to improve their efficiency and effectiveness in performing demanding tasks

Benefits:

  • Continuous monitoring of fatigue and crew well-being
  • Prevention of critical errors
  • Improvement of operational safety and efficiency
  • Enhancement of overall crew performance
  • The AI-driven fatigue monitoring system

A multidimensional approach

At the request of its client, ATEXIS embarked on a project to develop innovative methods of predicting and addressing fatigue. Because traditional approaches lacked the multidimensional analysis required to do this effectively, they set out to design an AI-driven system capable of collecting and analyzing physiological and subjective data – such as blood pressure, sleep quality, and oxygen saturation – to provide actionable insights and timely alerts. In doing so, they sought to improve both crew performance and operational efficiency.

SmartCrew

The result of this effort is SmartCrew, an empirical project that uses sensorization technology combined with AI to assess and predict mental and physical fatigue, alerting users to take preventative action. SmartCrew begins by conducting a detailed, multidimensional assessment – subjective, behavioral, and physiological – of mental and physical fatigue symptoms in the military personnel. For the analysis, a wide range of data is collected including on blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, sleep quality, subjective fatigue, and other relevant physiological parameters. The project then uses AI models to predict when personnel are likely to experience fatigue, enabling the user to take proactive measures to enhance performance.

The tools

Python was the main development language. Exploratory data analysis (EDA) techniques provided essential insights. Machine learning models, such as Deep Neural Networks, Random Forest, and Linear Discriminant Analysis, were essential for improving predictive accuracy, enabling real-time decision-making and supporting comprehensive monitoring. Wearables, using Garmin sensorization devices, were deployed to provide a comprehensive monitoring system.

Fast, effective, adaptable

Thanks to SmartCrew, the risk of fatigue-related incidents should be reduced and overall crew performance is expected to increase, ensuring greater safety during missions by helping command assign the most suited personnel to each task. The project would enable the customer to adapt these measures to the client’s needs, easing deployment and continuous improvement of the process, adapting to the specific crews it is applied upon. The ability to predict fatigue helps to reduce accidents, improve mission effectiveness, and promote crew well-being.
